Iran's Intelligence Minister killed in Israeli strike on Tehran
Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib has been killed in an overnight airstrike in Tehran, the latest in an intensifying campaign of assassinations carried out by Israel against the Islamic Republic's leadership. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed Khatib's death in a statement on social media, where he mourned the minister alongside other senior figures targeted by recent Israeli operations.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that the Israel Defence Forces were responsible for the strike, which occurred as part of a widened authorisation for the military to target any senior Iranian official. This assassination marks the third high-ranking official to be slain by Israel within a 24-hour window, further escalating tensions in the region. The Israeli government has increasingly focused on direct strikes against Iranian sovereign territory and its top-tier administration.
The death of the Intelligence Minister follows a pattern of Israeli-instigated violence that has targeted Iranian officials across the Middle East. While Iran has repeatedly stated that its actions against Israeli interests and regional military installations are retaliatory responses to such provocations, Israel continues to expand its campaign of targeted killings. In response to the ongoing presence of Western military infrastructure, Iran has previously warned that regional hosts of foreign bases remain legitimate targets should they continue to facilitate external aggression.
