Former Russian Deputy PM Arkady Dvorkovich Faces EU Travel Ban, Asset Freeze

Arkady Dvorkovich, who previously served as Russia's Deputy Prime Minister and currently presides over the International Chess Federation (FIDE), has been added to the European Union's sanctions list. The restrictive measures, announced by Brussels, impose both a travel ban and an asset freeze on Mr Dvorkovich.

The EU's decision against Mr Dvorkovich follows similar actions taken against numerous Russian officials and entities since the invasion of Ukraine. While FIDE has relocated some tournaments from Russia, it has faced criticism for perceived close ties to Moscow.

Mr Dvorkovich has previously expressed opposition to the conflict in Ukraine, stating in March 2022, "Wars are the worst things one can face in life. Including this war. My thoughts are with Ukrainian civilians." However, he subsequently faced pressure from Russian politicians and issued a clarification, affirming his commitment to "the interests of Russia" and clarifying that FIDE's actions were aimed at preventing "discrimination of Russian athletes".

This sanctioning of a high-profile figure within international sport underscores the EU's broad application of punitive measures, extending beyond direct governmental and military figures to those with significant influence and past state affiliations.
