Ghanaian Footballer Dominic Frimpong Killed in Armed Attack on Team Bus
Dominic Frimpong, a promising 20-year-old Ghanaian footballer, has been killed after the Berekum Chelsea team bus came under fire from suspected armed robbers.
The incident occurred as the team was returning from an away Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex in Samreboi on Sunday. According to Berekum Chelsea, masked assailants wielding guns and assault rifles blocked the road, ambushing the bus. The attackers opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for cover.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) issued a statement expressing its "profound shock and deep sorrow," extending heartfelt condolences to Frimpong's family and teammates. The GFA described Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana FC and had scored two goals in 13 appearances, as "a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league."
Investigations into the tragic incident are ongoing, with the suspects yet to be apprehended. The GFA has urged that "all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served" and confirmed it is in contact with relevant authorities and the club. Furthermore, the association has pledged to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for competitions within Ghana to "prevent such tragic occurrences in the future."
