Home Office Extends Police Protection to Non-MP Public Figures After Threat Assessments
The Home Office has confirmed that police protection, traditionally allocated to Members of Parliament, will now encompass other prominent public figures. This change comes after assessments identified an elevated risk level for individuals playing a significant role in public discourse and institutions, irrespective of their parliamentary status.
Shabana Mahmood, a Labour MP, stated that the previous arrangements provided “insufficient protection” for those who contribute to public life outside the direct parliamentary sphere. The decision reflects a recognition that threats, often emanating from online harassment and real-world intimidation, have become more widespread, targeting campaigners, journalists, and local councillors.
While specific details on the criteria for receiving such protection remain confidential for security reasons, it is understood that threat assessments will be conducted on a case-by-case basis. This expansion aims to bolster security for a wider array of individuals who, by virtue of their public roles, are deemed vulnerable to attack or serious harm.
