Hungarian President Katalin Novák Resigns Over Child Sex Abuse Pardon Scandal
Hungarian President Katalin Novák has announced her resignation, effective immediately, after public and political pressure mounted over her decision to pardon a man implicated in a child sexual abuse cover-up. Novák, a close ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a former family minister, made the announcement in a televised address.
The controversy centred on Novák's pardon, issued in April 2023, for the former deputy director of a state-run children's home. This individual had been convicted of coercing children into retracting their testimonies against the institution's director, who was found guilty of sexually abusing minors.
Alongside Novák's departure, Judit Varga, the former Justice Minister who countersigned the controversial pardon, also declared her withdrawal from public life. Varga had been slated to lead the Fidesz party's list in the upcoming European Parliament elections. Her resignation as a Member of Parliament and withdrawal from the European election campaign underscore the political fallout from the scandal.
Prime Minister Orbán had attempted to mitigate the political damage by proposing a constitutional amendment to prevent future pardons for individuals convicted of crimes against children. However, this measure proved insufficient to quell the public outcry, which saw thousands protest in Budapest and prominent figures, including government-friendly commentators, distance themselves from the President's actions.
Novák's resignation marks a significant blow to the Fidesz party, which has dominated Hungarian politics for over a decade. Her appointment as President in 2022 was seen as a strategic move to project a more moderate image for the government on the international stage, particularly regarding family values.
