Kanye West Postpones Marseille Concert Following UK Entry Ban
US rapper Kanye West has announced the indefinite postponement of his scheduled concert in Marseille, France. This decision closely follows the cancellation of his headline performance at this summer's Wireless Festival in London, a move prompted by the UK government's refusal to grant him entry into the country.
Government Scrutiny and Rapper's Apology
French media had indicated that Interior Minister Laurent Nunez was actively seeking to ban the 11th June event. An unnamed source close to Nunez reportedly told AFP that the minister was "highly determined" to prevent the concert.
West, who now goes by Ye, issued a statement on X, expressing that the postponement was his "sole decision" and acknowledging the need for time to understand the sincerity of his commitment to make amends. He added, "I take full responsibility for what's mine but I don't want to put my fans in the middle of it."
The rapper has been attempting to re-enter mainstream public life following a lengthy apology published in the Wall Street Journal in January, where he stated, "I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people," attributing his past comments to bipolar disorder and a loss of touch with reality.
UK Ban and Future Engagements
The UK Home Office confirmed that West's application to travel to the UK via an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) was denied on the grounds that his presence would not be conducive to the public good. This decision referenced his 2022 social media post threatening "death con 3 On Jewish people" and his appearance on a podcast where he made positive remarks about Hitler.
Despite these setbacks, West's official website continues to list several other European engagements throughout May, June, and July in countries including Turkey, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, as well as a performance in New Delhi, India, in late May. Reports last week suggested that the Dutch asylum and migration minister had no plans to bar the rapper from entering the Netherlands.
