Kashim Chowdhury Faked Illness for Months, Juggled Five Civil Service Roles Simultaneously
Kashim Chowdhury, 36, stands accused of a deliberate scheme to defraud the British taxpayer by juggling multiple civil service roles while falsely claiming illness. The alleged fraud, which spanned months, saw Chowdhury simultaneously employed by five different government departments, collecting salaries totalling over £100,000.
Prosecution lawyers outlined how Chowdhury exploited remote working arrangements, claiming sickness from one department while actively working for others. He reportedly provided false medical certificates and engaged in what prosecutors described as a sophisticated deception.
Specifically, Chowdhury held positions with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and the Ministry of Justice, alongside other governmental roles. The court heard evidence suggesting he maintained a full workload across these separate employers, creating a complex web of overlapping commitments and payment schedules.
This case highlights potential vulnerabilities within remote work frameworks in government, particularly concerning oversight and accountability for public funds. The trial continues, with Chowdhury denying all charges of fraud by false representation and abuse of position.
