Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Olney Resigns Frontbench Position Over Ed Davey's Leadership
Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament Sarah Olney has resigned from her frontbench position as the party’s Spokesperson for Business and Industrial Strategy. The Kingston and Surbiton MP cited disillusionment with the party's leadership as her reason for stepping down.
Olney's departure signals internal dissent within the Liberal Democrats, though Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper swiftly moved to downplay the significance. Cooper stated that “the vast majority of our MPs support Ed [Davey]” and expressed strong disapproval of what she termed a “distraction” from the party’s immediate objectives.
This internal friction emerges at a critical juncture for the Liberal Democrats, who are seeking to consolidate their position in local government and target specific constituencies ahead of the next general election. The party's ability to present a united front will be scrutinised as it aims to challenge both Labour and Conservative dominance.
