Mauritius Imposes Curfew Following Days of Riots Over Water Shortages, Police Killing
A curfew is now in effect across Mauritius after days of intense rioting that represent the most significant civil upheaval in the nation for decades. The unrest, which began as demonstrations over critical water shortages, intensified sharply following the fatal shooting of a woman by police.
Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam declared the curfew, citing the breakdown of public order. The protests quickly devolved into widespread looting and arson, with key infrastructure and businesses targeted across the island. The initial grievances surrounding inadequate water supply, a persistent issue for many communities, were tragically amplified by the police action, galvanising public anger.
International observers note that such widespread internal dissent is uncommon in Mauritius, an island often presented as a stable democratic example in the region. The underlying causes point to deepening socio-economic frustrations that the government has struggled to address, now brought to a head by the perceived heavy-handed response from state security forces.
