Naples Bank Robbery: Hostages Freed as Thieves Vanish Via Tunnel
A daylight robbery at a Crédit Agricole bank in Naples saw 25 people taken hostage before the armed perpetrators vanished through an underground tunnel. Police surrounded the branch shortly after the incident began around midday local time.
Hostage Release and Aftermath
Negotiations reportedly took place with the robbers, leading to the release of all hostages approximately two hours into the ordeal. Videos shared on social media depicted firefighters smashing windows to assist people exiting the building. While some appeared unharmed, others were visibly distressed, with six individuals offered medical assistance for shock.
One former hostage recounted that the robbers, though armed, did not employ violence and had locked them in a room. Authorities confirmed that all hostages were freed without serious injuries.
The Escape
Despite a significant police presence, including special forces flown in from Tuscany, the robbers had reportedly already made their escape by the time officers stormed the premises. Local media suggested they fled through a tunnel, potentially accessing the city's sewer system. Carabinieri and firefighters were later observed investigating a nearby manhole.
The value of the stolen goods remains unquantified, as reports indicate the thieves targeted personal safety deposit boxes rather than the bank's cash reserves.
