
New Vaccine Storage Method Could Halt Waste of Half of Global Doses
Researchers at the University of Bath have achieved a breakthrough in vaccine preservation, maintaining the stability of immunisations at room temperature for an extended period. This development directly confronts the substantial global challenge of vaccine spoilage, with current estimates indicating that up to 50% of all doses are discarded annually due to failures in maintaining the requisite cold chain storage. The logistical and financial burdens associated with refrigerated transport and storage render many vital vaccines inaccessible or ineffective in remote and less economically developed regions.
The patented method, known as EnzBond, encapsulates vaccine proteins within silica cages. These protective barriers prevent the delicate biological components from degrading when exposed to heat, eliminating the need for continuous refrigeration. The process is reported to be cost-effective and scalable, offering a practical solution to a longstanding barrier in global public health. This innovation has the potential to transform vaccination programmes, particularly for populations in areas lacking reliable electricity and cold storage infrastructure, where vaccine waste is most acute.
