Russian Anti-War Politician Boris Nadezhdin Flees Country, Posts Video From Paris
Boris Nadezhdin, a Russian politician known for his critical stance on the war in Ukraine, has confirmed he has fled the country. Mr Nadezhdin, who was recently labelled a 'foreign agent' by the Kremlin, published a video on social media showing him in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
In the video, Mr Nadezhdin stated his decision to leave Russia was a direct consequence of the escalating political repression. His designation as a 'foreign agent' came after his attempt to register as a presidential candidate was blocked by the Central Election Commission earlier this year.
The Kremlin's 'foreign agent' designation, a tool widely criticised by human rights organisations, is frequently applied to individuals and groups perceived as opposing government policy. It imposes strict reporting requirements and carries a significant social stigma, effectively marginalising those who receive it.
Mr Nadezhdin had gained prominence for his outspoken criticism of the military operation in Ukraine, advocating for its cessation and a return to diplomatic engagement. His departure underscores the shrinking space for dissent within Russia's political landscape, as the government continues to consolidate power and suppress opposition voices.
