Seoul Threatens 'Further Action' Over Ukraine's Prisoner-of-War Row Allegations
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has issued a stark warning to Ukraine, threatening 'further action' if Kyiv fails to retract and apologise for allegations concerning South Korea's role in prisoner-of-war affairs. The presidential office in Seoul condemned Ukraine's statements, which implicated South Korea in facilitating the transfer of captured personnel, as unfounded and inflammatory.
President Lee Condemns Kyiv's Provocations
In a forceful statement, President Lee accused Kyiv of 'attempting to provoke a war on the Korean Peninsula' through its unsubstantiated claims. This diplomatic escalation follows earlier reports from Ukrainian sources suggesting that South Korea had been involved in arrangements for prisoners of war, a claim Seoul vehemently denies.
The South Korean foreign ministry reiterated that the allegations were entirely false and demanded an immediate clarification and apology from Ukrainian authorities. Seoul emphasised its neutrality in the ongoing conflict and its commitment to international law, dismissing any notion of complicity in wartime transfers. The situation underscores the delicate balance South Korea seeks to maintain while navigating global conflicts, particularly as it faces its own geopolitical challenges in the region.
