South African Officer Recovers Human Remains from 500kg Crocodile in Komati River
A South African police captain has detailed a highly dangerous operation involving a helicopter and a large crocodile to recover human remains from the Komati River. Captain Johan Potgieter, a veteran of 38 years with the South African Police Service, was lowered from a helicopter to secure a 4.5-metre, 500kg crocodile suspected of consuming a businessman.
The businessman's car was discovered abandoned last week after attempting to cross a flooded low bridge, leading police to suspect he had been swept away. Drones and helicopters located a group of crocodiles sunbathing on an island, one of which was believed to have consumed the man.
Potgieter's colleagues shot the suspected crocodile, but it subsequently moved upstream. Given the presence of other crocodiles, hippos, and rocks, a boat recovery was deemed too hazardous. Potgieter recounted the necessity of sticking to the aerial plan, noting the lack of communication once suspended from the aircraft. Upon reaching the reptile, he confirmed its demise before securing it.
Remains, including body parts and shoes, were found inside the animal, with DNA tests underway for identification. South Africa's acting police chief commended Potgieter's "extraordinary bravery" in the "highly dangerous and complex" mission.
