Trinidad Police Discover 56 Bodies, Including 50 Infants, Dumped in Cumuto Graveyard
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has confirmed the discovery of at least 50 infant remains and six adult bodies in a graveyard located in Cumuto, approximately 40km from Port of Spain.
A preliminary investigation suggests the incident constitutes an "unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses". Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro described the discovery as "deeply troubling" and pledged full accountability for any individuals or institutions found culpable.
Five of the adult bodies, comprising four men and two women, were found with identification tags. Two of these individuals reportedly showed evidence of having undergone post-mortem examinations.
The current state of emergency, first implemented on 2 March and subsequently renewed, grants police expanded powers for search and arrest. The US State Department has issued multiple travel advisories for Trinidad and Tobago, citing concerns over crime and a "heightened risk of terrorism."
While official statements claim a reduction in violent crime since 2024 due to enhanced security measures, criminal activity remains a significant challenge within the country, which registers one of the highest murder rates in Latin America and the Caribbean.
