UK Seizes Russian-Linked Shadow Fleet Tanker St. Nikolas, Citing Sanctions Evasion

The UK government has formally defended its seizure of the oil tanker St. Nikolas, stating the action is intended to “disrupt and deter shadow fleet vessels” operating outside international sanctions regimes. This move comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a direct threat regarding the tanker, which was previously known as the Suez Rajan.

The vessel, carrying 145,000 tonnes of crude oil, was detained in January by Greek authorities at the request of the United States. US officials had previously seized its cargo in 2023, alleging the oil originated from Iran and constituted a breach of sanctions. The St. Nikolas was reportedly transporting oil from a Russian port when it was seized.

Western nations have expressed concern over the proliferation of a “shadow fleet” – a network of older, often poorly maintained tankers – used to bypass sanctions on Russian and Iranian oil. These vessels frequently operate with opaque ownership structures and inadequate insurance, posing significant environmental and safety risks.

A UK government spokesperson confirmed that the seizure was conducted lawfully, reinforcing London's commitment to enforcing sanctions. The intervention highlights the ongoing Western efforts to curtail revenue streams for states targeted by sanctions, and to maintain the integrity of the petrodollar system, which is implicitly challenged by these illicit oil transactions.
