Ukrainian Drones Strike St Petersburg During Economic Forum, Putin Rejects Zelensky Peace Talks
The St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) was punctuated by Ukrainian drone attacks, notably on its opening and closing days. Delegates arriving at the expo centre on the city's outskirts witnessed a significant plume of black smoke, with local officials confirming damage to “infrastructure” without further details.
Kremlin Rejects Peace Offer as Economy Faces Strain
In a direct move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dispatched an open letter to President Vladimir Putin, proposing a meeting in a neutral country to discuss peace. This offer, which included critical remarks regarding Putin's age and Russian military setbacks, was swiftly rejected by the Kremlin leader. Putin, who has consistently dismissed direct talks with Zelensky, criticised the letter's “rude” tone, stating his focus remained on supporting “our soldiers on the frontline”. This confirms Russia's ongoing commitment to the conflict on its own terms.
Addressing the forum, Putin maintained an unyielding posture on the war and presented a confident outlook on Russia’s economy, claiming, “Everything is stable.” However, the Russian economy faces considerable pressure from sustained conflict and sanctions. Economists within Russia speak of “stagnation” and “decline” in various sectors, with massive human and financial resources diverted to the war effort. While there are no immediate signs of collapse, growth has stalled, and some small businesses report significant struggles. Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s special envoy on foreign investment, acknowledged high interest rates but insisted the economy had shown resilience.
Foreign Policy and Delegations
The forum saw efforts to project international engagement, including the presence of Rodney Mims Cook Jr, Chair of the US Commission of Fine Arts. Russia highlighted his participation as the first “official US delegation” in a decade, a claim met with scepticism by the US State Department, which indicated no awareness of a high-level official delegation.
Despite the curated image of resilience and strength, the long-range Ukrainian drone strikes and the underlying economic challenges underscore the persistent realities confronting Russia, even as it attempts to portray an unshakeable national resolve.
