US Musician D4vd Pleads Not Guilty to Murder of 14-Year-Old Celeste Rivas Hernandez
US musician David Anthony Burke, performing as D4vd, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and related charges in connection with the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Burke, 21, faces accusations of murder with special circumstances, including "lying in wait", "financial gain", and murdering a witness to an investigation.
During his initial court appearance in Los Angeles on Monday, Burke remained silent as his legal team entered his plea. His defence has asserted that the "actual evidence will show that David did not kill Celeste" and was not the cause of her death.
The Charges and Investigation
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman outlined the prosecution's case, stating that Celeste Rivas Hernandez was last seen on 23 April 2025, when she visited Burke's Hollywood Hills home. Her dismembered and decomposed remains were subsequently discovered on 8 September 2025, in the front boot of a Tesla registered to Burke. Authorities reportedly found severed arms and legs within a bag in the vehicle.
Hochman alleged that Burke committed the murder for "financial gain", claiming the victim threatened his musical career. Furthermore, he stated that Rivas Hernandez was a witness in an investigation into alleged sexual acts committed by Burke, leading to the third charge of murdering a witness. The District Attorney's office has indicated that the death penalty could be pursued in this case, which also involves allegations of numerous sexual acts with a minor and body mutilation.
Police Response and Court Orders
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell defended the force's handling of the case, which has drawn criticism for the delay in providing details since the discovery of the body seven months prior. McDonnell emphasised the need for patience and discipline to ensure justice, citing the degraded state of the remains and the substantial time elapsed as factors complicating the investigation and cause of death determination.
The court has ordered the public release of the coroner's report on the teen's death, a move previously barred by authorities. The Rivas Hernandez family has expressed their commitment to ensuring Celeste's voice is heard throughout the legal process. Burke remains in custody without bail.
