Virudhunagar Firecracker Factory Blast Kills 25, Officials Investigate Safety Breaches
At least 25 individuals have been killed following an explosion at the Vanaja Fireworks Industry in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. The blast, which occurred on Sunday evening, also left four people seriously injured, with an additional 13 sustaining injuries during subsequent rescue operations when a second explosion occurred.
Police have confirmed that approximately 50 workers were inside the factory at the time of the initial blast, despite the facility reportedly being scheduled for closure. The force of the explosion severely damaged at least three rooms and reduced parts of the building to rubble. Rescue efforts were hampered by continuing firecracker detonations within the structure.
A complaint has been filed against the factory's owner and foreman, both of whom have absconded. Four special teams have been deployed to locate and apprehend them as an investigation into the cause of the blast commences.
District Collector N.O. Sukhaputra stated that the factory's operation on a Sunday constituted a "first violation," though it possessed a valid licence. Checks into further potential safety breaches are ongoing. Identification efforts for the victims are continuing, with 22 of the 25 deceased, predominantly women, identified thus far.
Accidents within India's firecracker industry are a recurring concern, frequently raising questions regarding adherence to safety standards. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin have both expressed sorrow and offered condolences, with Stalin pledging full assistance to those affected by the tragedy.
