Aberdeen South By-Election Set for June 18 Following Stephen Flynn’s Holyrood Election
A by-election to fill the Westminster seat for Aberdeen South is scheduled for Thursday, June 18. The vacancy arose after Stephen Flynn, formerly the Scottish National Party’s (SNP) Westminster leader, was elected as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Aberdeen Deeside and North Kincardine earlier this month.
Flynn secured his Holyrood seat on May 7, overcoming the Conservative candidate with a narrow majority of 1,244 votes, representing a 3.6% margin. His departure from Westminster was a mandatory step to assume his new role in the Scottish Parliament.
Known as one of the SNP’s more prominent politicians, Flynn has stated his intention to advocate for North Sea oil and gas workers, individuals grappling with the cost of living crisis, and “young people searching for hope and aspiration” in his new capacity. Speculation is rife regarding his potential future leadership within the SNP.
Nominations for candidates in the Aberdeen South by-election are set to open tomorrow and will close on Friday of this week.
