South Africa is grappling with a severe increase in gender-based violence, following the discovery of nine murdered women in recent weeks. The case of Dineo Motapane, found dead in the North West province, has become a focal point, illustrating the pervasive threat to women in the country.

Official statistics from the country's Forensic Pathology Services reveal a disturbing trend. Data presented to Parliament showed a 36% rise in domestic violence deaths between April and June of the previous year compared to the same period in 2020. This translates to an average of one woman murdered every three hours during that three-month span.

Activists and human rights organisations have long highlighted the systemic nature of this violence, frequently criticising the state's perceived failure to adequately protect women and ensure justice for victims.
