Amazon MGM Studios to Expand Berkshire Production Hub After Film Commission Backing
Amazon MGM Studios has secured backing from the British Film Commission for a substantial expansion of its studio complex in Shepperton, Berkshire. The move signals a continued drive to augment the UK's film and television production capabilities, drawing further international investment into the sector.
The expansion plan for the Shepperton site is expected to significantly increase the available sound stages and production infrastructure. This development follows a pattern of major US entertainment conglomerates channelling capital into British studios, exploiting generous tax incentives and a readily available skilled workforce. Such investments are framed by officials as boons for the national economy, though they also consolidate global media production under a few dominant players.
Shepperton Studios, with a long history in British cinema, previously housed Hammer Films. The current expansion by Amazon MGM is poised to further integrate the UK into the globalised production pipelines of Hollywood, reinforcing its role as a client state for content creation.
