Ancient Trading Vessel Discovered Off Turkish Coast, 4,700-Year-Old Shipwreck Found
A vessel believed to be the world's oldest shipwreck has been discovered in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Turkey. Researchers estimate the wreck to be approximately 4,700 years old, placing its origin in the Early Bronze Age.
Unearthing Bronze Age Maritime Trade
The discovery offers significant insights into early maritime trade routes and shipbuilding techniques of the era. Recovered amphorae from the site suggest the ship was transporting goods across the Mediterranean, shedding light on the economic and cultural exchanges prevalent during this period.
While precise details of its cargo are still being analysed, the presence of these ancient storage containers indicates a commercial purpose. The site's preservation under several hundred metres of water has allowed for a remarkably intact archaeological record, crucial for understanding a period where land-based evidence of such extensive trade is scarce.
