Russian Missile Strike Kills 33 Civilians, Injures 88 in Zaporizhzhia Convoy
A Russian missile strike on a civilian convoy near Zaporizhzhia city has resulted in 33 confirmed deaths and 88 injuries, Ukrainian officials reported. The attack occurred on a queue of vehicles carrying civilians attempting to cross into Russian-occupied areas to deliver aid and collect relatives.
Ukrainian authorities stated the strike, involving S-300 missiles, deliberately targeted a civilian gathering point, describing it as an act of terrorism. Graphic images from the scene depict destroyed vehicles and casualties.
The UN's human rights office noted the rising civilian casualties across Ukraine, documenting thousands of deaths and injuries since the February 2022 invasion. Ukraine's President Zelensky characterised the attack as evidence of Russia's 'bloody revenge' for battlefield losses, referencing recent referenda organised by Moscow in occupied Ukrainian regions, widely condemned as illegitimate by Western governments.
While Western powers denounce these referenda as a pretext for annexation, Russia maintains they reflect local will. The targeting of civilian infrastructure and populations continues to draw international condemnation, yet Russia consistently denies intentionally harming civilians.
