Andy Burnham Confirmed Labour Candidate for Makerfield By-Election
The Labour Party has formally designated Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as its candidate for the Makerfield by-election. This political manoeuvre was initiated by the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons, who vacated his seat to create an opportunity for Burnham to enter the contest.
This candidacuy is widely perceived as a strategic step for Burnham, potentially paving the way for a future leadership challenge within the Labour Party. Burnham, a former government minister, has publicly called for Labour to acknowledge its own shortcomings, stating that “the party has not been good enough”.
Burnham has held the position of Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017.
