Andy Burnham Dismisses Knowledge of Russell Brand Crimes During Labour Outreach
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has responded to questions regarding the Labour Party's past associations with Russell Brand, stating that politicians who engaged with the comedian a decade ago had no knowledge of his alleged criminal behaviour. The comments follow recent accusations of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse against Brand.
Labour Engagement Detailed
In 2014, Mr Burnham, then Shadow Health Secretary, appeared on Brand's YouTube channel, 'The Trews', to discuss public health matters. Other senior Labour figures, including then-party leader Ed Miliband, also engaged with Brand, who at the time was advocating for political disengagement.
Mr Burnham clarified that his appearance was part of an effort to reach young voters, particularly those who felt alienated from conventional politics. He stressed that at the time, Brand was seen as a popular figure with a large youth following, and there was no public indication of the serious allegations now being investigated.
The Mayor asserted that the accusations against Brand are "extremely serious" and constitute "crimes," indicating a significant shift in the perception of the comedian since Labour's previous interactions.
