Henry Nowak's Family Describe Trauma of Observing Police Handcuff Son While Dying
The family of Henry Nowak has described the profound trauma of seeing their son handcuffed by police officers as he lay dying. Nowak, aged 31, died at his family home in Barnsley in the early hours of 20 September 2023, following what authorities initially reported as an accidental fall down a flight of stairs.
His parents recounted the distressing scene to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as part of their ongoing investigation. They allege that South Yorkshire Police officers were present when Nowak suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite the critical medical emergency, officers reportedly proceeded to handcuff him. This account has raised significant concerns regarding police protocols during medical emergencies and the prioritisation of restraint over immediate medical assistance.
The IOPC is currently examining the circumstances surrounding Nowak's death and the actions of the attending police officers. This investigation will scrutinise whether established procedures were followed and if the use of handcuffs was proportionate or appropriate given Nowak's grave medical condition. The family seeks clarity and accountability for the actions observed during their son's final moments.
