Apple Settles $250 Million iPhone AI Lawsuit Over Siri Capabilities
Apple has agreed to a $250 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit accusing the company of false advertising concerning its new artificial intelligence (AI) features. The settlement, filed on Tuesday in a California federal court, does not include an admission of wrongdoing from Apple.
The lawsuit contended that Apple’s marketing of 'Apple Intelligence' and an enhanced Siri voice assistant constituted false advertising. Specifically, the complaint alleged that Apple promoted AI capabilities that were not present in the advertised iPhone models at the time of purchase, nor are they currently available.
According to the settlement, individuals who purchased an iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 between June 2024 and March 2025 will be eligible for payments ranging from $25 to $95.
A company spokeswoman stated the lawsuit centred on “the availability of two additional features” within a broader rollout of Apple Intelligence. She added that the company resolved the matter to focus on delivering innovative products and services.
However, lawyers for the consolidated class of iPhone buyers argued that Apple’s promotional campaign around AI was an attempt to compete with emerging AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic. They asserted that Apple’s claims about transforming Siri into a “full-fledged personal AI assistant” were not delivered, with the iPhone 16 notably lacking the promised 'Apple Intelligence' and 'Enhanced Siri'.
