Australian Author Craig Silvey Jailed for Child Exploitation Material Possession
Craig Silvey, the prominent Australian author known for 'Jasper Jones' and 'Runt', has been sentenced to three years and two months in gaol. The conviction follows his guilty plea in May to charges related to possessing child exploitation material.
Perth Children's Court Judge Kate Dix ruled that Silvey would be eligible for parole after serving 19 months of his sentence. The judge acknowledged the author's early admission of guilt and his previous clean record. However, she also highlighted the serious nature of the offences, noting the material included images and videos depicting child sexual abuse.
Police initiated an investigation into Silvey in January, executing a search warrant at his Fremantle home. This led to the discovery of the illegal content that formed the basis of the charges.
Silvey's literary career includes winning the 2009 Western Australian Premier's Book Award for 'Jasper Jones', which was later adapted into a film. 'Runt' secured the children's fiction award at the 2023 Indie Book Awards. His work has frequently appeared on school reading lists across Australia.
