Beckham Becomes First UK Sports Billionaire, Gallagher Brothers Join Sunday Times Rich List
The annual Sunday Times Rich List reveals significant shifts in the fortunes of the UK's wealthiest individuals, highlighting the Beckhams' substantial financial growth and new entries from the music and business sectors.
Sanjay and Dheeraj Hinduja maintain their top position for the fifth consecutive year, with a combined fortune of £38bn, derived from their extensive global interests in oil, gas, banking, and transport.
Notable Shifts and Newcomers
This year's list records 157 UK billionaires, a reduction of 20 since four years prior. King Charles' estimated wealth has risen by £40m to £680m, placing him at number 230, ahead of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty, whose fortune stands at £563m.
Among the most significant risers are Nik Storonsky of Revolut and trading entrepreneur Alex Gerko. Conversely, inventor Sir James Dyson experienced a substantial fall in wealth, decreasing by £8.8bn to £12bn, partly attributed to US tariffs.
New entrants include Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis and her family, with an estimated fortune of £400m. Christopher Harborne, a British billionaire, enters the list in sixth place, drawing recent attention for his £5m donation to Nigel Farage's Reform UK in 2024.
The 'Two Exoduses'
Robert Watts, compiler of the list, noted a phenomenon he termed "a tale of two exoduses." He observed that one in six individuals and families from the list two years ago are no longer featured. Additionally, many foreign billionaires previously residing in the UK have departed, while a growing number of British nationals are now resident in locations such as Dubai, Switzerland, and Monaco. The list continues to include British nationals regardless of their current country of residence.
The Sunday Times Rich List methodology relies on identifiable wealth, encompassing land, property, art, racehorses, and significant shares in publicly quoted companies, but it does not account for private bank accounts.
