Bedford Man Shot Dead by Police in Aylesbury Road Incident, Neighbours Call Him 'Harmless'
A man died in Bedford after armed police shot him following a standoff at his Aylesbury Road residence on Tuesday. Police stated they had been negotiating with the man, who had barricaded himself inside, before officers discharged their firearms after he allegedly presented a weapon at approximately 09:30 BST.
The Bedfordshire force has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has initiated an investigation.
Neighbours Raise Concerns Over Mental Health
Residents living near the man described him as a 'genuine, quiet, nice guy' who was 'harmless' and 'always polite'. Donna and Paul Freeman, who live metres away, stated their neighbour had mental health issues. They recounted how private ambulance staff had attempted to 'coax him out' of his home on Saturday.
On Monday at 06:00, the Freemans were evacuated from their house after police reported the man had threatened to turn on his gas supply, risking an explosion. Upon their return four hours later, they encountered the man's 'distraught' family, who had heard the fatal gunshots.
Robert Nsubuga, a next-door neighbour, observed the man playing music outside his door at approximately 22:00 on Monday, just hours before police told Nsubuga's family to vacate their home early Tuesday morning, citing threats to 'burn the house, open the gas'. Mark Swales, a local resident for 25 years, described the deceased as a 'very nice chap', adding that his father's recent passing had 'upset him quite bad'. Swales had contacted 101 over the weekend, expressing concerns about his neighbour's health, a sentiment shared by other residents.
An anonymous neighbour was awoken at 05:30 by a fire engine and witnessed a growing police presence. She recounted hearing 'shot, shot, shot' after officers entered the house, expressing profound upset over the death of her neighbour, who she reiterated had 'mental health issues'.
An IOPC spokesperson confirmed an independent investigation is underway, with investigators deployed to the scene to gather evidence, extending thoughts to the man's family and those affected.
