A train collision near Bedford has resulted in one fatality and left nearly 90 individuals injured, with over 30 described as serious, according to British Transport Police and the East of England Ambulance Service. Passengers on board detailed the immediate aftermath, including widespread injuries and panic.
Teresa Itabor, travelling from Wellingborough, recounted a “massive bang” after leaving Bedford station. Her head struck the seat in front, and upon opening her eyes, she observed “people on the floor with blood everywhere.” She added that the carriage doors became jammed, preventing immediate exit.
Dr Peter Knapp, in the front carriage of one involved train, described the scene as akin to a “bomb explosion,” noting “bloodied faces,” suspected broken legs, and smoke throughout the carriage. He observed passengers “spitting out blood” as police took details at the roadside.
Brett Byatt, another passenger, noticed the train braking unusually before a “boom, smash” that sent passengers “flying into one another.” He witnessed severe injuries, including a woman with a “completely snapped leg” and another unable to move due to a back injury. A male passenger was immobilised on the floor with a neck injury.
Shola Mene corroborated accounts of a “big bang,” stating people “flew from their seats” and seats were dislodged. She described a passenger hitting her husband’s face, resulting in “a lot of blood” and numerous facial injuries among those on board.
