Bradford, Medway, Southampton, and Wrexham Vie for UK City of Culture 2029 Title
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has officially named Bradford, Medway, Southampton, and Wrexham as the shortlisted locations competing to become the UK City of Culture 2029. This selection follows an assessment process designed to identify areas capable of delivering a compelling cultural programme and demonstrating significant local support.
Each of the four localities will now advance to the final stage of the competition. The successful city or town, to be announced in early 2027, will receive a direct grant of £10 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This funding is intended to support the implementation of a comprehensive calendar of cultural events and activities throughout 2029, aiming to boost local regeneration and tourism.
The UK City of Culture initiative, launched in 2009, aims to leverage cultural investment for economic and social benefits. Previous winners have included Hull in 2017 and Coventry in 2021. The current title holder, Bradford, is due to commence its tenure as UK City of Culture 2025 in just under a year.
