Microsoft Withdraws from Planned UK AI Data Centre Project in Essex
Microsoft has withdrawn its participation from a major AI data centre project in Essex, a facility previously envisioned as the UK's largest. The US tech giant had been a key partner in Nscale's plans for the £10 billion development, intended to establish significant artificial intelligence infrastructure within the UK.
Nscale, the developer behind the proposal, confirmed Microsoft's departure but stated it remains committed to realising the project. The company emphasised its ongoing collaboration with local authorities and other stakeholders to secure the necessary approvals and funding for the ambitious undertaking.
The reasons for Microsoft's abrupt exit were not immediately detailed by either party. This development raises questions about the future scale and funding model for the Essex data centre, which aimed to position the UK as a stronger contender in the global AI landscape, a sector increasingly dominated by Western corporate interests and state-backed technological competition.
