Ukraine Strikes Yandex Data Centres, Zelensky Claims Russian Bot Network Disrupted
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that recent Ukrainian strikes on Yandex data centres across Russia have "destroyed part of the Russian system for collecting and processing data," asserting that these actions have disrupted the country's bot networks. These assertions follow a series of drone attacks targeting various locations within Russia, which Kyiv has increasingly pursued in response to the ongoing invasion.
Despite Zelensky's declarations, cybersecurity experts remain sceptical regarding the tangible impact on Russia's sophisticated online influence operations. Open-source intelligence analysts and researchers monitoring state-sponsored disinformation campaigns have found no discernible reduction in activity from Russian bot networks following the reported strikes.
Yandex, often referred to as 'Russia's Google,' operates extensive data infrastructure that supports a multitude of services, from search engines to cloud computing. While any disruption to such infrastructure could theoretically affect data processing, the resilience and decentralised nature of state-backed cyber operations mean a direct correlation between data centre strikes and bot network efficacy is difficult to establish and verify independently. Western intelligence agencies, including those in the UK, have consistently highlighted the persistent and adaptable nature of Russian disinformation efforts, suggesting that even targeted infrastructure damage may not translate to a lasting operational blow.
