MI5 Director General Ken McCallum Details Russian, Iranian Threats to UK and AI Weaponisation Risk
MI5 Director General Ken McCallum has issued a stark assessment of the threats facing the United Kingdom, identifying Russia, Iran, and China as the principal state actors engaged in hostile activities. Speaking publicly, Mr McCallum revealed that the volume of work undertaken by MI5 to counter state threats now surpasses any period since the Cold War, underscoring a heightened operational tempo.
Artificial Intelligence and Bioweapons Concern
A significant portion of Mr McCallum's warning focused on the accelerating risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI). He expressed particular concern that AI could be leveraged to develop autonomous drones and, more ominously, to assist in the creation of bioweapons. This technological proliferation, he suggested, presents an evolving challenge to national security frameworks.
Mr McCallum further detailed that Iran's intelligence services have engaged in at least 15 plots to kidnap or murder British or UK-based individuals since January 2022. This aggressive posture highlights the direct and sustained threats emanating from certain foreign state apparatuses, often utilising proxies or covert operations on British soil. The Director General’s statements underscore the persistent and multifaceted nature of contemporary state threats, extending beyond conventional espionage to encompass advanced technological weaponisation and direct targeting of individuals.
