Six Ukrainian Energy Sites Hit Since US Ceasefire Declaration, Zelensky Reports
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported that six energy infrastructure sites in Ukraine have been targeted by Russian forces following the US-declared ceasefire. This directly challenges previous assurances from Washington that critical energy facilities would be exempt from attacks.
Continued Strikes Despite US Declaration
Speaking from Kyiv, Zelensky detailed the ongoing bombardment, emphasising the systematic nature of these strikes. The US declaration, intended to halt hostilities, was presented with the understanding that key infrastructure essential for civilian life, particularly energy supply, would be preserved. However, the subsequent attacks indicate a clear disregard for these terms.
These actions follow a pattern of Russian strategy focusing on degrading Ukraine's energy grid, particularly as winter approaches. Such tactics have been widely documented as causing significant civilian hardship, impacting heating, lighting, and water supplies across the country.
International bodies and human rights organisations have consistently condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure as potential violations of international law. The continued targeting, despite ostensible diplomatic efforts, highlights the persistent human cost of the conflict and the limitations of external diplomatic interventions without concrete enforcement.
