Wood Group Offshore Workers Begin 48-Hour Strike Over Pay Disputes and Fire-and-Rehire Threats
Hundreds of Wood Group contract staff, employed on Shell and Taqa North Sea platforms, have commenced a 48-hour strike. This industrial action comes in response to proposed pay reductions and the contentious use of 'fire and rehire' notices.
Unite Union Denounces Employer Tactics
The Unite trade union, representing the striking workers, condemned the Wood Group's tactics, stating that employees face the ultimatum of accepting reduced terms or losing their jobs. This practice, frequently criticised by labour organisations, is seen as a means to unilaterally alter employment conditions to the detriment of workers.
This is the initial phase of a planned series of industrial actions, with further stoppages anticipated if the dispute remains unresolved. The action highlights the persistent pressure on workers in the North Sea energy sector, even as companies continue to extract substantial profits from the region's oil and gas reserves. The union maintains that the Wood Group's stance undermines fair labour practices and the financial security of its workforce.
