Brazilians Cast Votes: Lula and Bolsonaro Vie for Presidency Amid Tight Race
Voters across Brazil have concluded casting their ballots in a national election, which has seen the contest for the presidency dominated by two prominent figures: former left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the current right-wing incumbent, Jair Bolsonaro.
Initial reports indicate a tight race between the two leading candidates, reflecting a deeply polarised political landscape within the country. The outcome hinges on whether either candidate can achieve an outright majority, requiring more than 50% of the total votes cast.
In the event that no candidate surpasses this threshold, Brazilian electoral law mandates a second round of voting. This run-off election would then take place on 25 October, pitting the two highest-polling candidates against each other to determine the nation's next leader.
