British Banks Offer £220 Incentives for Account Switching as Savers Miss Billions
A new analysis indicates that British savers are collectively missing out on billions of pounds each year by maintaining existing bank accounts rather than switching providers. This comes as numerous banks are offering significant cash incentives to attract new customers.
Customers could secure up to £220 by moving their current account. The calculations suggest that if all eligible current account holders switched to the most favourable deals, the collective gain could reach £6.7 billion annually.
The data highlights a marked disparity in how banks reward loyalty. Established high street banks frequently offer minimal interest rates on current accounts, often less than 1%, while challenger banks and specific promotions provide substantially higher returns and upfront cash bonuses. For instance, some providers are offering a combination of a £200 switching bonus alongside a 5% interest rate on balances up to £1,500.
Despite the clear financial benefits, a considerable number of consumers remain reluctant to change banks, citing perceived hassle or a lack of awareness regarding better offers. This inertia effectively subsidises the less competitive offerings of larger, legacy institutions.
