Caernarfon Building Society Cashier Admits Five Fraud Counts After Colleagues Noticed Lavish Holidays
Kelly Kershaw, 54, a former cashier at the Caernarfon Nationwide Building Society branch, pleaded guilty to five counts of fraud. The court heard that Kershaw exploited some of the most vulnerable customers, including an 85-year-old stroke victim and a 49-year-old man with learning difficulties.
Prosecutor Huw Evans stated that Kershaw, who had been a trusted employee for 18 years, was discovered after colleagues noted her frequent, expensive holidays and perceived lifestyle beyond her modest GBP#1,400 monthly take-home pay. Social media posts depicted Kershaw on safaris, skiing, sailing, and travelling to destinations such as the Caribbean, Paris, Tuscany, and Dubai, alongside an image of a BMW convertible with a personalised registration.
An internal investigation commenced in October 2024 following suspicions that Kershaw was forging customer signatures and processing unauthorised cash withdrawals. The offences occurred throughout 2023 and 2024. Nationwide has reimbursed the affected customers, and compensation of GBP#8,630 is being sought.
Kershaw, from Nefyn, Gwynedd, attributed her actions to a 'compulsive shopping addiction', claiming she also gave money to beggars and paid household bills. However, she conceded that funds were also spent on holidays. Defence solicitor Michael Strain stated Kershaw did not know what caused her behaviour and expressed remorse, noting she had lost her job, reputation, and good name.
The probation service described the offences as 'despicable'. Kershaw has been released on bail and is due for sentencing on 8 May.
