Como Mayor Bans Electric Bikes After Personal Collision in Italian City
Como Mayor Alessandro Rapinese has issued a city-wide prohibition on electric bicycles, mandating that the vehicles be pushed on foot within the city limits. The ban applies universally, affecting both local residents and visitors to the popular Italian destination. Offenders caught riding an electric bike will be subject to a fine of €77.
Rapinese stated his decision was directly influenced by a personal encounter, remarking, "I know what it's like to be hit by one of these beasts." The mayor's office asserts that the measure is a necessary step to safeguard public safety, citing the increasing prevalence and perceived hazard of electric bikes in Como's thoroughfares.
The prohibition extends to all types of electric bicycles, irrespective of their power output or design. While the municipality has not specified the duration of the ban, its immediate implementation signals a firm stance against the unregulated use of electric bikes in the city.
