Conservatives Pledge Legal Changes to Curtail Unauthorised Traveller Sites

The Conservative Party has announced its intention to reform the Town and Country Planning Act, granting local authorities and police enhanced powers to dismantle unauthorised traveller sites. This proposed legislative alteration forms part of the party's manifesto, positioning the policy as a critical measure to uphold planning regulations across the country.

Under the proposed changes, local authorities would be enabled to more readily issue enforcement notices for breaches of planning control related to these encampments. Furthermore, the police would see their powers augmented, allowing for swifter action to remove individuals from land where unauthorised sites are established.

A spokesperson for the Conservative Party stated that the current legal framework is insufficient, leading to prolonged and costly disputes for local councils and landowners.
