Converse Withdraws Instagram Advert Following Social Media Condemnation Over Image Resemblance
Sports footwear manufacturer Converse has removed a recent advertisement from its Instagram platform after numerous social media users identified imagery resembling a Ku Klux Klan hood and a hanging. The advert, which featured an individual in an oversized white garment, prompted swift and widespread condemnation.
The company issued a statement acknowledging the public's negative reaction. “We are deeply sorry for the upsetting content,” a Converse spokesperson stated, adding, “We have removed the post and are reviewing our internal processes to ensure this does not happen again.”
The incident highlights the ongoing scrutiny companies face regarding their visual marketing campaigns, particularly in a climate where cultural sensitivities and historical traumas are increasingly foregrounded. Critics online articulated that the advertisement, however unintentionally, invoked the violent and racist history of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States, an organisation responsible for terrorising Black communities through lynchings and other acts of white supremacist violence.
