Delhi Air Quality Deteriorates to 'Very Poor' Category Before Diwali Festivities
Delhi recorded a 'very poor' air quality index (AQI) of 377 on Wednesday, persisting as a critical health concern for residents. This classification signifies a significant risk of respiratory illness for individuals during prolonged exposure.
The city administration has enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks until January 2024, a measure specifically targeting the traditional Diwali celebrations that often exacerbate pollution levels. Despite these prohibitions, the air quality continues to decline due to a confluence of industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust, and agricultural stubble burning in neighbouring states.
Medical professionals have issued stark warnings about the adverse health effects, particularly for children and the elderly, with hospitals reporting an increase in respiratory complaints. The ongoing struggle to implement effective, long-term solutions highlights the persistent environmental and public health challenges facing the Indian capital.
