Digital ID Apps Approved for Age Verification in England and Wales Pubs

Pubs, bars, and clubs in England and Wales are now permitted to accept digital ID apps for age verification purposes. New regulations, effective from Tuesday, allow licensed premises to recognise these applications alongside established forms of identification such as passports and driving licences.

The Home Office has specified that only digital ID apps provided by certified identity service providers, accredited under the UK Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework, will be accepted. Patrons will need to present these apps on their mobile devices, and venue staff are required to visually verify the digital identity and potentially match it with the individual. A crucial stipulation is that staff must not handle the customer's device.

This policy shift follows a trial conducted across 100 premises in Manchester and the surrounding areas, which concluded last autumn. The introduction of digital age verification methods is intended to streamline the process for both customers and venues, while maintaining security standards. The government maintains that this move aligns with a broader strategy to modernise identity verification processes within the UK.
