Donald Trump Must Provide Sworn Testimony in Panorama Defamation Lawsuit
Donald Trump has been ordered to provide sworn testimony in his ongoing defamation lawsuit against the broadcaster. The former US President is pursuing legal action over a 2021 episode of the investigative programme Panorama.
Trump alleges the programme manipulated an interview with him, specifically by editing together two distinct sections of a speech. He claims this created a false impression that he was referring to the January 6th Capitol riot as 'shameful' and 'a disgrace', when his remarks were, he asserts, directed at news organisations.
Judge Florence Taylor Barner, presiding over the Florida court, ruled that Trump must give a deposition. The lawsuit, initially filed in May 2022, seeks damages exceeding $75,000.
The broadcaster maintains its reporting was accurate and stands by the integrity of the Panorama episode. This legal challenge underscores the persistent tension between powerful figures and media organisations, particularly concerning editorial control and public perception.
