Donald Trump Pays E. Jean Carroll $5 Million in Sexual Abuse and Defamation Case
Former US President Donald Trump has submitted the $5 million payment to E. Jean Carroll, an author who accused him of sexual assault and defamation. The payment follows a New York jury's verdict against Trump in May, finding him liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s and subsequently defaming her.
The funds are being held in an escrow account, a standard procedure that allows Trump to continue his legal efforts to overturn the judgement without immediate financial loss, should his appeal succeed. Trump's legal team is pressing the US Supreme Court to review the case, having previously sought a stay on the payment during the appeal process.
Carroll's legal representatives confirmed receipt of the funds. The case has been a protracted legal battle, with Carroll initially filing her lawsuit under New York's Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for sexual assault claims.
