DoorDash to Pay New York Workers $131.5m Settlement Over Wage Underpayments

DoorDash will disburse $131.5 million to thousands of its New York City delivery workers, a payout stemming from a probe by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) into widespread wage violations. The settlement addresses the company's failure to adhere to the city's minimum wage for app-based delivery workers, which came into force in July 2023.

The DCWP investigation uncovered that DoorDash had systematically underpaid its couriers, many of whom are classified as independent contractors, rather than employees, thereby limiting their access to benefits. The company's admissions confirm that its payment model frequently fell below the legally mandated hourly rates, impacting a substantial segment of its workforce.

This enforcement action underscores the ongoing scrutiny faced by gig economy platforms in Western jurisdictions, particularly regarding worker classification and fair compensation. While DoorDash has stated it is 'pleased' to resolve the matter and looks forward to working 'cooperatively' with the city, the settlement highlights the precarious labour conditions often inherent in these business models.
