Driving Test Waits Drop to 19.7 Weeks, Two-Year Low, as DVSA Clears Backlog
New data reveals that the average waiting time for a practical driving test in September stood at 19.7 weeks, or approximately five months. This marks the lowest average wait recorded in two years, indicating some progress in reducing the substantial backlog that has plagued learner drivers across the UK.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has been under sustained pressure to tackle the accumulation of unfulfilled test appointments. The extended wait times have significantly impacted individuals seeking to gain driving qualifications for employment, personal mobility, and various essential roles.
Despite the recent improvement, a nearly five-month wait for a practical test still represents a considerable delay for many. The ongoing challenge for the DVSA will be to further decrease these times and ensure that access to driving tests is both timely and equitable across all regions, mitigating the economic and social burdens placed on learner drivers.
